Over the years we have discovered that it is not only
Americans of Indonesian decent, Indonesian Residents, &
Indonesian Students that share a strong interest for Indonesia
from the US, but also to include: Americans with a Indonesia
relationship; Professionals working in Indonesia for
International Organizations; American Companies Investing in
Indonesia; and Americas who may have lived or worked in
Indonesia.

Strong Roots

Whenever I think of my experiences growing up in the United States as a full-blooded Indonesian, I recall my father's garden, which he started when I was just ten years old. He returned from a three-month trip to Indonesia and we all circled his luggage scattered on the living room floor.

My 17-year-old sister has not set foot in Indonesia since she was four years old. I see her struggling in trying to count the numbers in Indonesian, and I am reminded of myself. There was a point in my life where I had a hard time pronouncing "satu, dua, tiga, empat" which in English is "one, two, three, four". I still find it hard to even say "selamat pagi"2 sometimes, but I know that her troubles would far exceed mines because she is just starting out.
